It is already a well-known fact that physical exercise is super important for our well being. Physical exercise is not just for those trying to shed some weight or for those aiming to achieve a certain physique. 

We all need to remain healthy through physical activity because it is important for our heart, muscle, bone and overall body system. Everyone needs physical exercise to keep fit, stay healthy and reduce the occurrence of various illnesses mostly caused by the sedentary lifestyle of our fast food generation.

However, a lot of times, what we struggle with when it comes to keeping an exercise routine is consistency. A lot of people start off with a lot of energy, but begin to feel less motivated and then give up along the way.

To sustain an exercise routine, you need to do the following:

  • You need to keep your eyes on the prize. What do you want to achieve with your fitness routine and why do you want to achieve it? You should have a vision for your fitness. This should enable you to keep going even when you don’t feel like it. You should be so madly in love with the results you hope to achieve that you will be willing to endure whatever it takes to get there.
  • You need to be patient. A lot of times, the result of your physical exercise does not start showing early enough, maybe on your weight scale, abs etc., but you have to know that something is changing nonetheless, and the results will eventually show. So, you need to be patient.
  • Have a solid routine. You need to choose a time that best fits the kind of exercise you want to do and when you are most free to do it. When you try hard enough to do it consistently for about 21 days, your entire body system will adjust such that when that time comes, you won’t be comfortable until you go through with your exercise. The 21 days rule works when you are trying to build any new habit or routine.
  • You need an accountability partner.I know it is common knowledge to get an accountability partner. However, for adults you need to be very self-motivated to be able to work with an accountability partner in the long haul. When you lose your personal motivation there are very high chances that you will find your accountability partner overbearing. I once started an early morning jogging routine with two of my friends. The idea was that we will be accountable to each other. However, a time came when waking them up became a problem because their motivation started to wane. They seemed to value sleep more than our jogging routine (chuckles!). Well, I didn’t stop because they did. I wanted the results bad enough.

Finally, do what you got to do to stay motivated. Be determined to push past the first 21 days and if possible, put your money where your treasure is. Maybe paying a fitness coach or signing up for a gym training might be your motivation because you wouldn’t want your money to go to waste. Cheers! to healthy days ahead.
